Operated by Becki Shaver and Maggie van Santen,HideAway Haven in Bayonet Head received a flood of nominations for the ACCIAlbany and Great Southern Weekender Customer Service Business of the YearAward.

Take a step inside HideAway Haven and it is nothard to see why their guests rave about their experience - everything has beenthought of to make their stay memorable.

"We believe we won because of our highstandards, our friendliness, and being able to anticipate what guests want butalso the fact we give more than this place," Maggie said. "We give anoverall experience so that our guests' stay in Albany is fantastic which is whywe go out and try restaurants, and experience tourist venues, blog about themand write them up in our newsletter." "That is why when people leavethey think we've done a great job because they don't have to spend the firsttwo hours at the visitor centre looking for where to eat and places togo."

According to Becki, HideAway Haven delivers whatthey market - outstanding luxury accommodation. "It is all positive reinforcement that weare on our way-there is still more we can do and more challenges. We can alwaysget better and always get out there more. You get one customer serviceaward but to get the next one you have got to be even better. We willcontinue to go the extra mile for our guests to ensure they have a wonderfulexperience here," Maggie said.

A holiday is such a rare treat for most of us that we want to squeeze every last drop of enjoyment out of it, and whether you’re planning a Fiji holiday , a backpacking adventure to Thailand, or whale watching in Albany, we’ve got a few tips that will help you do just that!

Budget
Part of planning the perfect trip is budgeting so that you’ll have enough money to last you, and so that funds aren’t going to be an issue. Wherever you’re going, figure out what you want to see, do, eat and of course where you want to stay. Decide on the type of trip you want to have before you start planning your budget, and then you can get a realistic idea of what you’ll need to spend to achieve it. Be generous with your predicted spend-per-day, because we all know that unforeseen expenses can arise and that little voice inside your head telling you to splurge gets mighty loud while you’re on holiday!

Itinerary

As luxury accommodation providers we give our guests the ultimate service during their stay with us. That is why we were winners in the 2011 ACCI Customer Service Business Award. Many guests ask us to recommend a restaurant. We don't like recommending if we haven't eaten there and can recommend with confidence, so headed off to Joop Thai. Joop Thai is a newly opened Thai restaurant in Albany.

Wow what can we say!! Thai cuisine is known for its balance of flavours and its use of fresh herbs and spices and Joop Thai gets 10/10 from us for flavour, presentation and service. The aromas coming from the kitchen were amazing. We were with a group of 10 and they all gave 10/10. Our waitress knew the menu and specials inside and out. The meals are so generous and but we were too full to try the amazing dessert menu. Apparently they don't sell many. Joop Thai is BYO and they do not charge a corkage fee. They are open from 5 - 9 Tuesday to Sunday and also serve Take-a-Way. In a very short time Joop Thai has become a very popular place to dine.

We spent a night in Fremantle last week. We stay at the Platinum Suites, which overlooked the Fremantle Marina. On our arrival we were warmly welcomed by Vicki, who admitted she was nervous having luxury accommodation providers staying with her. Platinum Suites is conventiently located on South Street and has all the conveniences necessary for a corporate stay, including free WiFi an absolute must for us.

We went to The Red Herring for dinner. Set over the glistening waters of the Swan River, the exquisitely designed surrounds exude style, elegance and magnificence. The night lights reflected on the water and we watched the boats come and go.

We had a very friendly, helpful waiter who was able to recommend dishes and wine.

It was nice to get away and spend some time together and have others wait on us instead.

'Bobby' is the newest member of our family. We went to the pet shop yesterday and there was this little blue budgie racing back and forth in his cage. He ran over, under and through the other birds in the cage. He squarked and squealed every time another budgie got in his way. We laughed and laughed so hard and decision was made. This little feisty bird with attitude and character would fit right in with our family. We picked out a cage fit for this character and took him home. The cats are sitting in front of the window staring at this newest toy and can't wait to come inside for a play.

The Pepper and Salt Restaurant was the perfect place to celebrate Becki's Birthday Surrounded by beautfiul gardens, vineyards and water fountains, we enjoyed a relaxing lunch with a nice bottle wine from Matildas Estate Winery. The service was outstanding during the entire meal and the visits from Chef Silas were appreciated and enjoyed. The food was scrumptios and the presentation faultless. We enjoyed the Pepper & Salt Regional Producers Platter and Blue Manna Crab Wontons,Scotsdale Marron in a Shitake and Bacon Hock Broth.

We loved the origin of the name of the restaurant and the pepper and salt grinder on the table. Chef Silas is Mr Pepper and his wife Ange is Mrs Salt. Ange was also the founder of the Denmark Mother's Day Walk for Cancer and we were proud sponsor's of this event, donating a nights accommodation to the winner of the online registration.

The beach from Mistaken Island to Goode Beach is one of our favourite Beaches. Mistaken Island is a small island located approximately 5 kilometres South East of Albany on the way to Camp Quaranup.

Located in King George Sound the island is located approximately 120 metres from Vancouver Peninsula.

In 1971, the island was declared as a class 1A Nature Reserve with a total area of 12 hectares. The area adjacent to the island is used to cultivate mussels on long lines which you can see from the beach. This is also a favourite place for snorkelling and fishing.

One of our favourite places to visit on a day off is Denmark - where the Forest meets the Sea.

Denmark is a fabulous food and wine region. The rugged coastline, beautiful beaches, inlets, rivers, towering karri forests make Denmark the perfect place to spend a day. After our lunch we headed to Ocean Beach where we spent time watching the kite surfers, waves and people on the beach. The sky and the water were a brilliant blue colour and it was nice to be outdoors smelling fresh sea air.

HideAway Haven ~ Luxury Accommodation hostesses had a very rare Saturday off today, so they headed off to 'the Lake House' in Denmark for a relaxing lunch. It really was an awesome day with blue skies. Denmark is a 30 min beautiful drive from Albany.

We don't often get a chance to have someone else cook for us so we splurged today and enjoyed

A banquet to indulge your senses with a spectacular selection of prawns marinated in red wine vinegar & tarragon, Mt Barker Smoked Trout with Vinofood Onion, Thyme & Red Wine Jam, Mt Barker Smoked Chicken, nut patties topped with Vinofood Tomato & Riesling Relish, vegetable frittata, Vinofood Beetroot & Shiraz Relish, antipasto bowl, Capel Club cheddar & Tasmanian Lactos brie cheeses complimented with Vinofood Wine Jelly, Semillon Pickled Pears and Fig, Apple & Chardonnay Chutney, garden salad drizzled with our chef’s special dressing, house baked bread & wafers.

We enjoyed a glass of classic white wine with our lunch. I loved the Tomato & Riesling & Beetroot and Shiraz Relishes, and Becki really enjoyed the Onion, Thyme & Red Wine Jam and the Semillon Pickled Pears.

Service was friendly and quick, ambiance amazing and relaxing.

If staying at HideAway Haven a trip to Denmark's 'the Lake House' is worth putting on your itinerary. They also have a very cheeky wine label called 'He Said She Said'

There is a range of vino food and winespa products available. Definitely worth a look and taste.

It really is a small world. In the past month some of our guests included a couple from Holland who works with my daughter's fiance. It was nice to hear first hand what a sweet guy my daughter is engaged to.

Another couple own a holiday home in Becki's home state Idaho and have a son who lives in the same town as Becki's brother and does the same kind of work as him.

Two couples staying with us this week had had business dealings in the past although they had never actually met. They also had cricket connections with family members.

We had a couple from France and one from from England. Found out that the English couples' sister lived in the same town as the French couple.

We have had a full house for the past 3 weeks so there has been a cooking frenzy happening in the kitchen, with 6 gourmet breakfasts headed out the door each morning.
Some of our guests comment that the best part of their day is checking out what is on the menu for breakfast the morning and then waiting anxiously for it to arrive the next morning. Our guests have no trouble getting up in the morning, knowing that breakfast will be waiting for them.
No matter how long you stay there will be different items to pick from each morning. We have guests that are here for 10 nights - that will be a challenge. Looking for recipes!!

It was a beautiful sunny day with blue skies and a gentle breeze. It is only an hours walk to Emu Point. We had lunch at the Emu Point Cafe. We were so happy to see Emu Point alive and buzzing. How fantastic that we finally have a place at Emu Point that is open and serves fantastic food. A cafe with million dollar views. The smell of coffee as I walk past there once a week is wonderful.

On our way home we were awestruck by the Western Australian Christmas Tree. Nuytsia floribunda is well known in Southwest Australia, where it is named the Christmas tree, the common name outside of this region is Western Australian Christmas tree. The appearance of abundant flowers in summer is a spectacular display especially with the backdrop of our blue skies.

We passed a Horse Farm and were welcomed by some gorgeous friendly horses. You won’t experience any of of this in any other location.

We have special friends staying with us this weekend. Adina and Michael first stayed with us last year and this is their 3rd time at HideAway Haven. We have all become very good friends. Adina's parents are visiting from Romania and Michael's parent's are visiting from Adelaide.

It is Adina's Father and Micheal's Mother's birthday on Sunday and a stay at HideAway was part of a special gift for them.

We had a lot of laughs tonight and enjoyed a gourmet style meal at 'The Wild Duck'. The food served on our plate looked like paintings with the rim of plates its frame. Glad we didn't have to wait as long as it took Rembrandt to do his portraits. The colours, shapes, textures and flavours were amazing. There were so many surprises, like taking off the lid to my entree 'Dam Buster' and a huge cloud of steam escaping, or cutting the ravioli on Becki's Fish dish spilling out a beautiful asparagus sauce. Adina's dessert of Fried Egg on toast reminded me of Martin Blunos's signature dish on Master Chef which looked like a boiled egg with toast soldiers, but was actually a dessert of vanilla ice-cream, pastry cream and mango coulis in an egg shell, served with shortbread.

Service was smooth and unobtrusive, and there were some small surprises along the way such as an appetizer and a palate sensor (cleanser) between entrée and main. We had such a laugh when Maureen thought it was a sensor ....all kinds of scenarios were thrown around.

When booking your stay at HideAway Haven we highly recommend a visit to 'The Wild Duck' for dinner. Gourmet cooking and presentation taken to a whole new level. Well Done Kristy & Andrew......your awards are all well deserved!!

We thought the ultimate luxury was a Jacuzzi under the open skies and under a trillion stars. Tonight the Haven stays empty so we treated ourselves to 5 o'clock wine time in the Jacuzzi. This is the time when the birds come out to feed and play.

We were delighted to observe two devoted and very affectionate doves. One bird of the pair was sitting in a tree branch right above us and called out for its mate with a two-note call. They were reunited and he greeted her with very low, raspy coos. We watched as they cuddled with each other and exchanged very rapid light pecks around the neck and head while slightly shaking their wings.

We watched the Finches, Parrots and Rosellas play in the trees and eating seeds.

The Jacuzzi has panoramic views of farmland, Emu Point and the Kalgan River. So spend the afternoon in the Jacuzzi and languish in peace and tranquility

We had a family of 3 sisters and their husbands from NSW stay with us for 2 nights. The accommodation was booked through Jetset Travel Hurstville. They were awarded "State Office of the Year" for 2009/2007. Can't go wrong by recommending their clients to HideAway Haven

A couple travelled all the way from Perth to celebrate their wedding anniversary. They enjoyed a romantic Italian Dinner in the common room. HIdeAway Haven is the perfect place for that romantic getaway.

Tonight we headed off to the ‘new’ Rustlers Steak House. The minute we walked through the door we were immediately impressed by the gorgeous surroundings. Rustlers have chosen their colours wisely and used the space well of what used to be a Health Club.

For those of you planning a trip to Albany put it on your list of places to eat while staying at HideAway Haven. Rustlers have been gold plate finalists from 2003 – 2007 and again in 2009. Is this true? - if the cows are lying down, the fish are not biting

Yesterday I was educated that when the cows are lying down, the fish are not biting. Well even the horses were laying down yesterday. Did that mean that the whales were also not out? Mutton Bird Island is a favourite fishing spot approx 16km from Albany. Main species that can be caught here are herring, skippy, rock species, whiting, salmon, silverbream, pike, flathead, shark, queen snapper and sampson fish.

But yesterday the beaches and the rocks were empty and there was not a fisherman in sight.

We went on long beach walk today from Ledge Beach to Gull Rock. Gull Rock Beach named of course, because of the large number of Gulls found on the rock just off shore, one of whom Captain Kalgan thinks might have been Jonathan Livingstone! Gull Rock is 26k East of Albany. The water was a turquoise colour and we were tempted to jump in. Albany has some of the most stunning and pristine beaches in Australia if not the world. There are beaches for fishing, snorkelling, swimming, surfing and body boarding. Stay at HideAway Haven while in Albany and enjoy some time at the beach. We have facilities for washing bathers and towels at the end of a day at the beach.

We took a drive to Emu Point Boat Harbour which is situated in Oyster Harbour to look at fishermen bringing in their catch, pelicans looking for a feed, Sam the Seal's monument and had an early dinner at The Squid Shack. We enjoyed local Fish & Chips with Salt 'n' Pepper Squid.

Sam the Seal was loved for his friendly nature and was found bludgeoned to death. A bronze memorial of Sam is in position at Emu Point.

Emu Point Harbour is where you will find the Kalgan Queen, a boat with glass bottom viewing. They will take you on a tour that takes in the path of the first settlers as they discovered the natural and stunning beauty of Albany. Your tour includes Billy Tea and optional Wine Tasting.

I received this in my email this week and thought it too cute not to share

It is not common for a Koala to bear twins, and regrettable in this instance the Mum was struck and killed by a passing car. Fortunately, the driver stopped, and took the mother to the local vet, unbeknown she was dead, - where it was discovered she had these twins in her pouch.

No information supplied on the development period - but it is a cute 'aweeee' to start the day.

We have an amazing variety of native shrubs and bushes in our garden. Last year we won 'Best Commercial Garden' because of our Eucalyptus Trees and the way we blend into the bush. As you drive down our street, you could be travelling in any suburb. HideAway Haven is tucked away at the end of a cul de sac and nestled in amongst the trees and bushes. An awesome experience awaits you as you walk down the stairs into the Haven where only the 'e' is missing.

Bring your camera and meander through our beautiful gardens while taking photos, then relax on your deck, take in the views and watch the many varieties of birds that play down below. Our garden is a retreat from the demands and pressures of travelling and the stresses of life and our visiting birds add moments of delight to our garden haven. Watching the birds play their part in our garden by pollinating and spreading seeds brings so much enjoyment and pleasure to our ‘HideAway’.

Native birds are attracted to red and yellow flowers, so we have lots of those as you can see in the photos. We have plants that flower at different times of the year, have plenty of water for them to bathe in and a feeder hangs in the tree with just enough seed to attract them.

Spring is the time when animals have their babies and we look eagerly forward to bursts of colourful flowers. I took a drive out into the country today and was thrilled and excited to see so many baby animals with their mothers and the colourful display of our wildflowers and canola paddocks. After the long dark winter it was amazing to see so many colours and so much animal love. It's the simple things in life

I am on holidays at the moment and Becki is still working. Today I bought some nice sandwiches, picked Becki up from work and went to a park nearby. No matter how old we are, we still get excited by seeing ducks and ducklings at the pond. It was great to be able to spend a lunch time together. We don't normally get that opportunity. Another occasion to be a tourist in our own town. Stay at HideAway Haven and make a lunch time date with your loved one at a local park, have a picnic and just watch the world go by and enjoy the ducks and their babies.

Middleton Beach Board Walk

It was one of those beautiful Albany winters day yesterday, so I took the camera for a walk along the boardwalk. I never tire of that walk, though I must admit it has been awhile. The boardwalk starts at Calamaris and is a great scenic walk or cycle path. It takes in the breathtaking and absolutely stunning views of King George Sound, Princess Royal Harbour and the islands. This time of the year you might be lucky to see whales playing close by.

Being a Tourist in our own City

Becki and I have decided to become tourists in our own city. So many of us never see our home city for what it really is. We go to work in the morning, come home in the afternoon, and never see our city through the eyes of tourists. What is it they see when they get of the bus, their rental car, the plane when they arrive in Albany. We are going to find out. Today I took my gorgeous niece Camille and her daughter Michaela to Calamari's Al Fresco to lunch. I had the standard fish & chips and Camille had the house hamburger. Michaela slept through it all. Calamari's must have the best views anywhere in the world and its right on our doorstep. It was a beautiful winter's day today, much to nice to be indoors. We enjoyed a lovely lunch then walked along the boardwalk. We were hoping to see some whales but they were not playing in our waters today.

We have a mother and her sister, daughter and god daughter staying with us. Another family that have the haven to themselves for the next two nights. We left them downstairs dancing around the poles, laughing and enjoying the sticky chocolate brownies I made this afternoon. They will all jump into the jacuzzi tonight. What fun!!

Another comment left in our guest book this morning by guests. Jonathan brought his parents with him to Albany and together with his partner they spent 3 nights with us. We block out the third room when couples are travelling together so there are no guests detracting from your time together.

We have had many of our guests impressed by the meal they enjoyed at Lime 303, we thought it was time to try it out for ourselves. We were not disappointed. We took Ann our housekeeper to express our thanks to her for her tireless work and dedication to HideAway Haven. The food was fantastic and the presentation awesome. Our waitress was so helpful and all requests were met with a beautiful smile.

We had lunch at the White Star Hotel, home of Tanglehead Brewed Beers. Becki enjoyed a Lime Burners Stout, which is a rich creamy oatmeal stout with a hint of chocolate and coffee. I had a Southern White Ale which is a cloudy German-style wheat beer with banana and citrus aromas. We ordered 'The Star Plate' for 2 'Thai Beef Salad, Garlic & Chillie Prawns, Salt and Pepper Squid, pan fried chorizio, marinated olives, pesto and home made beer bread. Next time you are in Albany check out the White Star Hotel.

We headed off to the Boat Shed Markets this morning. The Markets, started in June 2008 selling the best of seafood, including oysters , mussels and squid from the clean waters of Albany together with other fresh local condiments. We took a walk to Middleton Beach today and saw whales playing just off the shore. What a privilege watching these whales put on a breathtaking display for us. Whale watching tours can be booked with the Silver Star or Albany Whale Tours in Albany begin in late May and continue until October. We haven't had a chance to get out yet, but as soon as we do we will be able to share some awesome photos with you.
