Western Ringtail Possums listed as 'rare or likely to become extinct'.

Phoebe - ready for release

Our beautiful Phoebe, a Western Ring Tail Possum who was orphaned when she fell of her Mummies back as she was branch hopping between the trees, is now ready to be a big girl in the wild. Joslyn hand reared Phoebe for several months until she had gained enough weight to be released. Phoebe has been out the the past several nights, racing across the deck, trying to climb windows and waking us up. We think she has ventured further a field now as we don't hear her, but every morning we find her fast asleep in her pouch. She is not eating the food we leave out for her, so she must be getting enough to eat during the night. Western Ring Tail Possums love Peppermint Tree leaves and we have plenty of those in our backyard.

There is little knowledge of the social behaviour of Western Ringtail Possums. They are said to be very solitary and mostly live on their own, but our Phoebe loves it when we spend time with her while she is in her pouch. We don't handle her anymore as she needs to learn to be a wild child, but she knows where she can be safe and warm.

The Western Ringtail Possum is listed as a threatened species. Their legal status under the EPBC Act (Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) is "Vulnerable" and under the West Australian Wildlife Conservation Act (1950) they are listed as 'rare or likely to become extinct'. We are so blessed to have Phoebe here, she can join Polly who is our resident wild possum.

Phoebe came to us from licensed wildlife carers Pauline and Kevin at Dreamers Dream Wildlife Rehabilitation in Mount Barker. This is now our Sammie Jo's new home. We are guided by their expertise and knowledge during Phoebes release stage.

"It is such a privilege to share our backyard with a species that cannot be found anywhere else on this entire planet."

Love our Markets in Albany

HideAway Hostesses feel blessed to live in Albany where there is so much choice for fresh local foods. At the Albany Farmers Market the REAL FARMERS from their farms come and sell FRESH produce they have grown or reared themselves.
Fresh Blueberries from the Eden Gate Blueberry Farm

Fresh Berries from Marshalls

A selection of produce from the Great Southern

Oranje Tractor Orchard

Micro Herbs
This food has travelled just a few kilometres, not thousands. An established top spot to shop for the day to day and for the unexpected and unusual! The quality and range of product EVERY week is enormous - not only every imaginable type of fruit, vegetable and salad vegetable, but also
Organic Beef and Lamb; Free Range Pork, Bacon, Ham; Free Range Chicken; Fish, Rock Lobster, Crab, Yabbies, Honey, Breads, Cow & Goat Yoghurt, Soft Cow & Goat Cheese, Ice-creams, Extra Virgin Olive Oils, Eggs, Jams, Preserves, Plants and Fresh Flowers together with a complementary selection of Organic grown vegetables and much much more. We do our weekly shopping here week, to ensure our guests get the freshest food available but also to support our local farmers by buying LOCAL.

Why is our farmers market so different to the many popping up everywhere?

"Farmers' markets are popping up everywhere. This one is different because it's all about the farmers. It was started by farmers, it's run by farmers," Mr Haines said.
And if you're not a Great Southern farmer selling only what comes from your farm, you won't get a look in. "That's what's made it Australia's best," Mr Haines says.

Albany Farmers Markets are open every Saturday morning from 8am to 12 noon where the local carpark comes alive. Better get there early though, stalls sell out very early.

The Albany Boatshed Markets are on every Sunday (no metter what the weather) from 10am – 1pm at the Boatshed on Princess Royal Drive, Albany.

Albany Boatshed Markets not only feature local growers and producers of fresh and gourmet foods, including the best fish in the Great Southern and Great Southern wines but also talented local artisans showcase their beautiful and distinctive products, such as candles and artwork

There is local live music every week, cooking demonstrations and yummy food and coffee. There is a happy, fun filled, relaxed vibe at these markets and we love spending time here on Sundays when we get the opportunity.

Is quantity more important than quality?

At HideAway Haven we believe guests eat with their eyes.  After a visit to the US recently we discovered that quantity was more important than quality in a lot of places. Here are some random photos taken during our time away.  We did have some real amazing food while we were gone...this is just showcasing some of the bad.

Should we serve Gelato to HideAway Haven guests in the summer?

We visited Frost Gelato SanTan Village a very popular gelato spot....it was so hard to choose, luckily there were samples so we got try a couple. Becki had salted caramel popcorn flavour and Maggie had Ferrero Rocher. It was so delicious we are thinking of introducing it for our guests in the summer. Researching gelato machines and recipes now in time for summer.
