Sammie Jo

Sammie Jo is our rescued orphaned joey.  She came to live with us 12 months ago.  She is such a sweetheart.  Raising a joey is a lot of work, but so rewarding.  She is a big girl now and able to survive on her own if that is what she wants, but she still loves her 3 bottles a day and is home right on time for her feeds.  She still sleeps indoors most nights, but that way we can ensure she is safe.  She loves hanging in the office with us and sleeps on the floor while we are working.  She is such good company and makes us laugh.

Guests love feeding her and enjoy spending time with her.  She has the free run of the property and we have never kept her fenced in or tied up.  She has her own diary on our website.  http://www.hideaway-haven.com.au/sammie-jos-diary/

Is quantity more important than quality?

At HideAway Haven we believe guests eat with their eyes.  After a visit to the US recently we discovered that quantity was more important than quality in a lot of places. Here are some random photos taken during our time away.  We did have some real amazing food while we were gone...this is just showcasing some of the bad.

HideAway Haven is an adult retreat and not suitable for children.

Delicious Bite of Heaven

Of all the food crazes of recent years, are macarons worth the hype? I think they are. They are delicious bites of heaven.

The crisp, rainbow-bright shell that cracks at the faintest bite, that soft, delicately chewy, nutty interior and the silky smooth ganache and French butter cream which sandwiches the two halves together is heaven in your mouth.

Lemon flavour

Rosewater flavour

Mint Flavour

patience, precision and a steady hand

I don’t really enjoy baking, but the art of making a macaron had me intrigued. Louise Everett from TheGardener’s Kitchen held a macaron making class yesterday that I attended. Making them was not half as difficult as I thought it would be. It does need a fair amount of patience and precision, which is not the kind of cook I am normally. Practice makes perfect and I intend to get this one perfect.

HideAway Haven guests you are in for a treat.

Birthday Dinner at 'Wild Duck'

Pork roll of confit pork with tomato chutney
cornichons, pork jelly and mustard spinach

Seafood Chowder shot with seared scallop...
I wanted a whole plate of this!!

Wild mushroom risotto with a micro herb salad

Duck Breast with sweet potato puree, spinach and orange glaze

Beef fillet with Persian Feta mash, baby carrot, asparagus, beetroot,
onion jam and red wine glaze

Dark chocolate cheese cake with white chocolate ice cream and ginger Turkish Delight
As it is Becki's birthday we decided to go to the 'Wild Duck' for their degustation menu.  The food couldn't be faulted...Andrew you did an amazing job.

The waitresses although very friendly were not very attentive...we had to ask for water and for pepper.  It was not explained that the wine was an extra....and only small tasting glasses.  After our first course with the wine (40ml), we decided to just buy a bottle to enjoy. With everyone in the restaurant enjoying the menu, the smoke that came out of the dome that had the chowder shots in it was a bit much. Bread is also an extra....

We are glad we went as we can now explain to our guests how the menu works.  Many of our guests have been and have thoroughly enjoyed themselves....would we go again?  Absolutely!!

'The HideAway Infusion' - Food, Passion & Creativity

'The HideAway Infusion’ – Food, Passion and Creativity

Albany, Western Australia – March 5, 2012 – Travelling usually involves exploring the best a region has to offer, from sightseeing to local wildlife. So why not plan an unforgettable vacation that revolves around the best of an area’s food and wine experiences?

Albany, on the south coast of Western Australia, is one of Australia’s most undiscovered, but exciting wine and gourmet food regions. The mild weather and abundant sunshine provide the perfect setting for a relaxing short- or long-term getaway.

Whether you are a gourmet cook, foodie or just someone who enjoys eating, you will enjoy the brand new ‘HideAway Infusion’ holiday package, brought to guests by HideAway Haven and Sharp Infusion.

This unforgettable experience allows local celebrity chef Daniel Sharp to share his passion for local, fresh and organic produce, and hostesses Maggie and Becki to show why HideAway Haven is an AAA rated 5 star hosted accommodation and was the big winner at the ACCI Business Awards 2011.

The ‘HideAway Infusion’ package has been carefully created to showcase the highlights and hidden treasurers on offer in Albany.

The culinary journey begins with a guided tour at the local markets. Daniel will show guests around the markets where they can taste local produce; sample amazing regional wines and purchase fresh organic ingredients for dinner.

Guests will then explore the region with Daniel and visit local wine-makers and food producers. The local farmers and wine-makers will be happy to talk to guests about the joys and challenges of growing their produce in the region.

Back at HideAway Haven, Daniel will work together with guests to use the ingredients purchased during the day in order to create a dinner to die for.

There is a lot to be excited about in this once in a lifetime package designed for the health-conscious and experience-seeking traveller.
